Give your Skin Tone, and your Self-Confidence, a Boost with Tyrosinase Inhibitors

Tuesday 12th September 2017
image

People with skin pigmentations–whether from a hereditary or environmental source–can suffer from low self-esteem and self-confidence. Hindered by the idea that they look different from everyone else, people with skin discoloration carry a psychological weight around with them daily. Skin lightening treatments, called tyrosinase inhibitors, can improve and correct fluctuations in skin tone, thereby boosting confidence and self esteem. In this month’s blog, the Be Day Spa experts explain tyrosinase inhibitors and why they’re beneficial in treating sun spots and other skin pigmentations.

What is a Tyrosinase Inhibitor?

A tyrosinase inhibitor is a topical cream used to lighten sunspots by blocking or sedating the production of melanin. Melanin causes your skin to have dark spots. By reducing the production of melanin, pigmentation becomes lighter, and your overall skin tone is improved.

Tyrosinase inhibitors can treat a variety of skin pigmentations, from those caused by fluctuations in hormones; skin reactions to various medications; sun exposure; or post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

Types of Tyrosinase Inhibitors:

  1. Prescription Lightening Agents are created with synthetic materials, such as Hydroquinone, a popular FDA-approved lightening agent. However, skin care products made from synthetic-based materials can cause skin irritations and harsh reactions.
  2. Natural Lightening Agents contain plant-based sources to help reduce the overproduction of melanin and restore your skin tone. Natural whitening products provide effective remedies without the adverse side-effects of synthetic treatments. They include ingredients such as, Alpha-Arbutin, Bearberry Leaf Extract, Kojic Acid, Mulberry Bark Extract, and Niacinamide.
image

Benefits of Tyrosinase Inhibitors:

Tyrosinase Inhibitors can be used to treat people with moderate to severe pigmentations. Tyrosinase inhibitors correct pigmentation and keep it from forming, thereby reducing or eliminating visible skin discolorations.

Even if you don’t suffer from complexion-related problems, skin lighteners contain ingredients that can improve your skin tone overall, and give your skin a youthful appearance.

Tyrosinase inhibitors are easy to use, making them convenient for your on-the-go lifestyle.

How do I Use a Tyrosinase Inhibitor?

A tyrosinase inhibitor can be applied anywhere at anytime, but to be effective, it requires continued use. Your skin has a memory and without continued treatment, it will return back to its damaged state. For effective results, it should be applied twice daily for a minimum of two months.

And as with any good skincare routine, it’s important to continue using a broad-spectrum SPF when in the sun to protect your skin cells from further pigmentation damage.

Makeup Tips for Teens:  A Parent’s Primer

Friday 28th July 2017
image

Walking through the makeup aisles at the store, your 12-year-old daughter marvels at the makeup choices available:  tons of brands, dozens of tools, hundreds of colors… You notice it yourself and wonder how you’ll be able to help her navigate through this multi-billion dollar industry. In this month’s blog, the makeup experts at Be Day Spa offer strategies on guiding your daughter towards a healthy makeup routine.

What’s the Right Age to Begin using Makeup?

Unlike certain rites of passage that pose required ages, such as registering to vote at 18, there is no specific age when girls begin wearing makeup. However, 12 to 13 is a general age range when most parents allow their daughters to start wearing makeup.

But your daughter doesn’t need to apply a full face of heavy makeup right from the start. Learning to wear makeup should be a gradual process. For example:

  • Age 10-12 - Begin with lip gloss, mascara, and blush.
  • Age 13-14 - Add in foundation and cover up.
  • Age 15-17 - Introduce eyeliner and eye shadows.

Learning the Art of Makeup Application- Internet or Makeup Pro

A quick Internet search on makeup application uncovers thousands of “How To” tutorials from articles, blogs, and videos. As more kids are digitally connected, it’s no surprise many are using the Internet to learn how to apply makeup. While sites like YouTube offer quick makeup tips they:

  • Fail to teach about appropriateness, such as a “smokey eye” isn’t suitable for school.
  • Don’t provide an opportunity to ask questions or share concerns.
  • Can’t assess what makeup colors or products work best for your face and skin type.
  • Can’t teach you makeup techniques to enhance the various features that are unique to your face.

A makeup consultant at a salon or spa, such as Be Day Spa, can offer lessons to help your daughter get started. Some spas, including Be Day Spa, offer makeup sessions specifically for teens. A makeup expert can:

  • Customize a makeup program to complement your daughter’s skin type and skin tones.
  • Offer a hands-on approach to ensure proper technique.
  • Teach your daughter about the appropriate types of starter makeup.
  • Answer your daughter’s questions and provide feedback on her technique.
  • Educate your daughter about the importance of a good skincare regime while using makeup.

Should Your Daughter Use Traditional or Mineral Makeup?

With aisles of makeup options, it can be a daunting task to narrow down the choices. But before you look further, there are two types of cosmetics to consider, traditional and mineral.

Traditional makeup is formulated with synthetic ingredients that can clog pores and irritate your skin. Mineral makeup is made of natural ingredients that won’t harm your skin or block your pores. A makeup product with few ingredients, such as Glo Mineral, is the overall better choice for your daughter’s skin.

Focus on a Good Skincare Regime

When girls begin wearing makeup, they often forget about skincare, which can lead to blemishes. Properly cleansing and moisturizing prior to wearing makeup and consistently removing makeup and cleansing before bed will give your daughter the healthiest skin to achieve the best makeup results.

True Beauty is Found on the Inside

While teaching your daughter about makeup selection and application, be sure to remind her that a person’s true beauty is found on the inside.

The Be Day Spa consultants can help you teach your daughter about age-appropriate makeup techniques. Contact Be Day Spa for a makeup session that will give your daughter the confidence to apply her own makeup to enhance her natural beauty.

Organic Self-Tanners Provide Safe, Natural-Looking Tans

Thursday 29th June 2017
image

When it comes to sunless tanners, or self-tanners, the adage “you’ve come a long way baby” certainly applies. The self-tanners of yesterday left your skin streaky, sticky, and draped in orange hues, but today’s organic self-tanners provide safe, natural-looking tans. In this month’s Be Day Spa blog, we examine the benefits of organic self-tanners.

Organic Self-Tanners Provide a Bounty of Benefits

While it’s important to avoid exposing your skin to the sun’s damaging rays, it’s equally important to avoid the harmful chemicals and additives contained in many self-tanners. Organic self-tanners give you that sun-kissed glow without exposing your skin to irritating preservatives or synthetic ingredients.

All self-tanners, including organic formulas, contain the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that reacts with dead skin cells to produce a pigment that darkens your skin to simulate a tan. Organic self-tanners, however, offer the added benefit of using water- and plant-based ingredients instead of chemicals and additives that can harm or irritate your skin.

Organic self-tanners are paraben-free. Most mainstream self-tanners contain parabens, preservatives that keep bacteria and mold from forming and being absorbed into your skin. Organic self-tanners use natural forms of preservatives–derived from sugars and salts–to keep mold and bacteria from seeping into your skin.

Organic self-tanners moisturize with nourishing ingredients. Regular self-tanners use chemicals, like lanolin, as a moisturizer. Organic self-tanners, such as COOLA Sunless Tan Collection, incorporate nutrients that are proven beneficial for your skin. Plant oils, shea butter, aloe vera, and green tea extract are moisturizing agents that work to improve your skin’s health over time, all while leaving your skin feeling silky smooth.

Organic self-tanners are free of synthetic fragrances. Traditional self-tanners try to mask the scent of DHA on skin with fragrances, which are usually synthetic and may trigger allergies and asthma. Organic self-tanners use natural ingredients such as vanilla, coconut oil and cocoa extract to conceal the odor of the DHA reactions.

image

Quick-drying organic self-tanners provide long-lasting results and a tan that will fade evenly and naturally over time.

Customized colors are available; orange not included. With Be Day Spa’s professional tanning services, including Lush Organic Airbrush Tanning, you can achieve the color you want without worrying about the orange glow that so many chemical-based spray tans leave behind. Together with your Be Day Spa consultant, you can customize the results of your tan by discussing the shade that works best with your skin tone and scheduling follow-up visits to maintain the specific tan you desire.

Organic Self-Tanner Products and Airbrush Tan Services in Manchester, NH

With an organic self-tanner, you can have the tan that you want without sacrificing the health of your skin. The tanning consultants at Be Day Spa can help you achieve a healthy, youthful-looking tan with their organic airbrush tan services and organic self-tanners. Now your skin can glow from the inside out. Contact the skincare experts at Be Day Spa to learn more about organic self-tanner services.

Beyond Relaxation: The Health Benefits of Massage

Tuesday 6th June 2017

Massage…it relaxes you, calms you, and boosts your immunity…Wait. What? Massage boosts your immunity?

Yes! Massage, often thought of as a pampering, relaxation service, actually provides a host of medical and wellness benefits. In this month’s Be Day Spa blog, we discuss the many health benefits of massage.

Health Benefits of Massage

  • Increasing blood flow, which can help improve the condition of your skin, giving slack skin a fuller appearance and adding vitality to a dull complexion.
  • Relieving back pain. Regular massages can help manage chronic back discomfort and help you feel and function better.
  • Improving range of motion and  joint flexibility, and alleviating any stiffness, aches, and pains associated with conditions such as arthritis and osteoarthritis.
  • Boosting immunity by stimulating your body’s natural defense system, which can increase disease-fighting white blood cells, and help keep you healthy.
  • Stretching weak, tight, or atrophied muscles, helping to reduce muscle spasms and cramping.
  • Assisting with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers, which can translate into shorter maternity hospital stays.
  • Improving circulation by pumping oxygen and nutrients into vital organs and body tissues.
  • Encouraging lymphatic drainage, the process of pushing toxins out from cells so that more nutrients can move in.
  • Promoting tissue regeneration, helping to reduce scar tissue and stretch marks and reducing post-surgery swelling and adhesions.
  • Releasing endorphins, those amino acids that work as your body’s natural painkiller.
  • Easing tension headaches and migraine pain. According to Web MD, a regular massage can reduce your number of migraines, and decrease the amount of pain felt with each migraine.
  • Reducing the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, resulting in elevated spirits and often, lower blood pressure. Massage can also boost serotonin and dopamine, neurochemicals that help reduce depression.

Health Benefits of Massage Increase with Frequent Visits

Regularly scheduled massages can help provide a sustained overall boost to your physical and mental health. Dedicating time and resources for massage at consistent intervals is an investment in your health and wellness.

Massage: A Gift that Keeps on Giving

Because a massage is relaxing and contributes to one’s overall health and well being, it literally is a gift that keeps on giving. At this time of year, a massage gift certificate makes a great gift for grads, dads, teachers, and coaches.

Benefits of Mineral Makeup

Tuesday 2nd May 2017

You check food label ingredients to maintain your good health. But do you ever read the labels on your makeup? You may be surprised to know that most traditional makeup contains synthetic chemicals, preservatives, dyes, and fragrances. As the demand for natural products rises, increasingly more women are using mineral makeup as part of their skincare routine. In this month’s Be Day Spa blog, we discuss the many benefits of mineral makeup for your skin.

What is Mineral Makeup?

Mineral makeup is made with natural ingredients, including mica, iron oxides, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide, which are ground into tiny particles. Suitable for all skin types, tones, and ages, mineral makeup is available in foundations, blushers, eye shadows, and bronzers, and offers several benefits for your skin.

Benefits of Mineral Makeup

Mineral makeup is lightweight and won’t clog pores. Traditional cosmetics often contain oils that clog pores and cause the skin to feel suffocated. Mineral makeup is lightweight and won’t clog pores, allowing your skin to breathe.

Its anti-inflammatory properties calm skin.  Mineral makeup’s unique blend of natural ingredients produces anti-inflammatory properties that can have a calming effect on your skin. This can help improve the appearance of acne, eczema, dermatitis, or rosacea.

Mineral makeup is great for sensitive or problematic skin. Unlike traditional makeup, which contain oils and other additives that can irritate sensitive skin, mineral makeup is preservative-free, and non-comedogenic, making it less likely to aggravate your skin and cause breakouts. Because it’s free of skin-irritating ingredients and helps cover and correct surface redness, mineral makeup is a good choice for those with acne or rosacea.

It helps protect your skin from the sun. Mineral makeup contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, ingredients also found in physical sunscreen. Used in conjunction with your daily sunscreen, mineral makeup can provide you with additional protection from the sun.

Mineral makeup has a natural look and feel. Mineral makeup products aren’t just good for your skin—they feel and look good as well. The fine, pure pigments of mineral makeup blend easily on the skin, offering you great coverage, a natural glow, and a healthy youthful appearance.

Whether you are just learning to apply makeup or have been using cosmetics for years, mineral makeup can be the perfect addition to your beauty routine. Sunscreen: the Difference Between Physical and Chemical Blockers

Wednesday 5th April 2017
image

The snow is finally melting, the days are getting longer and warmer; it’s time to get ready for the sun! “Don’t forget your sunscreen,” is echoed at beaches and ball fields every warm weather season. In this month’s blog, we’ll discuss the importance of using sunscreen and the difference between physical and chemical blockers.

Protecting Your Skin with Sunscreen

One of the most effective ways to protect your skin and keep it looking its best is to use sunscreen daily. Whether you spend five minutes or five hours in the outdoors—even on a cloudy day—sunscreen helps protect your skin by reflecting or absorbing some of the sun’s UV radiation or UV rays. Ultraviolet A (UVA rays) penetrate deep into the skin and damage tissue, but do not cause sunburn. Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are the painful rays that cause sunburn.

Effects of Sun Exposure on Unprotected Skin

Without sunscreen, repeated exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause damage to your skin. Even a small amount of sun exposure can damage your skin cells. You may not notice it now, but the damage is there and is cumulative over time. Untreated skin can lead to:

  • Loss of elasticity, giving skin a “saggy” appearance
  • Increased wrinkles
  • Premature skin aging
  • Brown “sun” spots
  • Skin cancer

Physical vs. Chemical Sun Blockers

There are two types of sunscreens: physical and chemical. Each uses different UV filters to protect your skin from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Physical blockers are formulated with mineral ingredients: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These ingredients sit on your skin, deflecting or blocking the sun’s UV rays, scattering the damaging UV rays away from your skin. Together, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide protect against the entire spectrum of UVB and UVA rays.

Chemical blockers use carbon-based compounds—such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and avobenzone—to absorb the sun’s UV rays and prevent them from penetrating your skin. For this reason, they are frequently called chemical absorbers. Its UV filters break down the sun’s UV rays, changing them into heat, which is released from your skin.

Chemical sunscreens protect against the full spectrum of UVB rays and, depending on the active ingredients, can offer as much UVA ray protection as physical sunscreens.

Which Sunscreen is Best for You?

As all skin is different, it’s best to understand how the ingredients in your sunscreen work and how each may help protect your skin. The following chart breaks down the characteristics of physical and chemical sunscreens.

Facial Peels Reduce Fine Lines and Improve Skin

Wednesday 15th March 2017

When it comes to taking care of your skin, you get out of it what you put into it. In our last blog, we discussed the importance of maintaining your skin’s pH balance. What else can you do to keep your skin healthy and beautiful? Consider adding regular facial peels to your skin regimen.  Why? Because they are a safe, relaxing, and affordable way to reduce fine lines and improve skin.

Types of Facial Peels

Before we discuss the benefits of facial peels, it’s important to understand the different types available to you. Peels are categorized according to how deeply the chemical penetrates your skin:

Medical-grade peels, which use stronger chemicals and penetrate more deeply into your skin, are provided by licensed medical professionals. They have a greater potential for side effects, including swelling, scarring, infection, temporary or permanent changes in skin color, and cold sore breakouts for those with a history of cold sores. You may also experience a period of intense flaking as the old, damaged skin is replaced by fresh, smooth new skin.

Superficial peels, which are provided by registered estheticians, gently penetrate the very top layer of your skin. They are painless with no major side effects, other than a slight tingling. You may be slightly red afterwards, but this can be easily covered with makeup. Some people refer to these as “lunchtime peels” since most women go right back to work following treatment.

Benefits of Facial Peels

With a superficial peel, a registered esthetician applies a mild chemical solution—often containing retinol or glycolic acid—to your skin. This solution remains on your face for roughly 15 to 20 minutes, during which time it gently dissolves the skin’s top layers, loosening the bonds that hold dead skin cells to healthy skin cells. After your peel, your skin will generally feel smoother, fresher, and younger.

Benefits include:

  • Enhanced skin texture and tone
  • Rebuilding of collagen and elastin
  • Reduction in fine lines around mouth and eyes
  • Decrease in skin discoloration and appearance of acne scars

How Often Should I Have a Facial Peel?

Because superficial facial peels are relatively mild, you can schedule a treatment every few weeks to keep your face fresh and youthful. Ask your salon if they offer discounts— like we do at Be Day Spa—when you purchase multiple treatments.

The Importance of Balancing Your Skin’s pH

Thursday 2nd February 2017
image

Are you suffering from acne breakouts, oiliness, redness, or dry patches? Chances are, your pH is out of balance. And when your skin’s chemistry is out of whack, you may be at an increased risk of premature aging. Crows feet. Smile lines. Lip wrinkles. You get the picture. Before you run out and purchase yet another promising skincare product, let’s take a moment to discuss the importance of balancing your skin’s pH.

What is pH anyway?

To better understand pH, we’re going to take a short trip back to our middle school science class. The scientific term “pH” stands for “power of hydrogen,” which is a measure of the level of acidity or alkalinity in a solution. It is measured on a scale of 1 to 14, with 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. Ideally, your skin should be slightly acidic–at a level of 5.5. According to Dr. Marnie B. Nussbaum, a licensed dermatologist in New York City, “Balanced skin is achieved when skin maintains the ideal pH of 5.5. At this slightly acidic pH, the skin is optimized to seal in hydration, while protecting us from free radicals, pollution, and environmental irritants.” How do you know if your skin’s pH level is off? If you skin is acting up, your pH is most likely out of balance.

image

Why Should I Worry About pH?

If you keep your pH in balance, you’ll enjoy healthier, more beautiful skin. When your pH is off-balance it means your skin’s barrier is damaged, resulting in problems ranging from dry skin to clogged pores. And according to a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology by Greg Hillebrand, PhD, patients with excessively alkaline levels (high pH) developed more fine lines and crow’s feet than those with balanced pH levels.

Keeping Your pH in Balance

Most of us can keep our pH in balance by avoiding the following:

  • using a rough wash cloth
  • washing or drying your face too vigorously
  • using too much hot water (warmer than lukewarm)
  • using harsh cleansers (avoid anything that isn’t soap, alkali, or surfactant-free)

Each of these actions can damage your skin’s acid mantle, a protective layer on the surface of your skin.

If your skin is out of balance, you can improve it by practicing proper skin care and eating a healthy diet. Choosing the right cleanser and moisturizer for your skin type is essential. For assistance, speak with a dermatologist or skin care professional.

5 Beauty Resolutions for 2017

Tuesday 10th January 2017
image

It’s that time of year: resolutions are high, determination is higher, and it’s the perfect opportunity to look back at where you were, and decide what you need to do to meet your personal goals. When it comes to taking care of yourself, it’s easier to stick with resolutions that quickly provide results, so here are 5 easy beauty resolutions that will make 2017 your best beauty year ever!

1. Take Care of Your Skin

Unfortunately, our skin is one of those things we rarely pay enough attention to–until it’s too late. Instead, we devote much of our time and money on whatever makeup we think our skin needs to look the way we want it to. While beauty trends come and go, clean, healthy, beautiful skin is always in. Caring for your skin should be second nature to you, not an afterthought.

This year, resolve to care for the skin you’re in! Be sure to remove the daily build up of makeup, pollution, and grime so your skin can naturally renew itself to good health. Talk to a professional to help get your daily skincare routine back on track and follow these general healthy skin care habits:

  1. Make sure to wear SPF, no matter how cold or cloudy it is.
  2. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice a day.
  3. Never sleep with makeup on–remove your makeup every night.

2. Eat More Water

image

You read that right! Water is essential to every function in our body, and most of us have a hard time getting enough into our systems. But drinking water isn’t the only way to benefit from hydration. Eating one serving of raw fruits and vegetables has the benefits of drinking a glass of water. Since the body breaks down the water contained in those foods differently than just drinking water, your body reaps different benefits. Try replacing one serving of liquid water with one serving of “solid” water from fruits and vegetables, and see what happens.

3. Take Care of Your Hands

From washing dishes, doing chores, and hand-washing–to taking a beating from daily exposure to the elements–our hands really have it hard. Take some time to pamper them this year. Exfoliate the old, dry skin and moisturize as often as needed. Your hands will thank you, and they’ll be better protected from all of the damage daily life does to them.

4. Attempt a New Makeup Look

It’s pretty easy to get into a rut once you discover what works for your daily makeup routine. This year, why not take a chance and change things up? Knowing what new trends, styles, or colors work for you can be daunting, but it may be just the thing you need to get a fresh start this year.

Makeup Consultation

Not sure where to start? Sign up for a makeup consultation with Be Day Spa’s experienced and caring makeup professionals. Schedule an appointment anytime in January, and you’ll receive a free gift from Glo Minerals. Don’t just stick with what you know– take a chance and do something exciting!

5. Be Fierce!

The only thing standing in the way of you and your best self is YOU! Determine what mental and physical barriers are in your way and what changes you need to make. YOU can be fierce! YOU can make it happen!

What Are Skin Serums, and Which Ones Should I Use?

Tuesday 8th November 2016
image

“Serum” can be an intimidating word; it’s not just a moisturizer or a cleanser, but a highly concentrated and specialized treatment for your skin. Sorting through all of the ingredients and the reasons why they would be beneficial for you can be overwhelming. But if you think of a skin serum as a healing and fortifying concoction, you can figure out what mix will work for you and what will help you find what you’re looking for.

Serums: Specialized Skincare Treatments

image

The ingredients and combinations found in some of the top serums can sound like a different language. Knowing what you’re looking for can help you narrow down your search. Some serums are made for hydration, some brighten your skin’s appearance, and others are specifically made to fight the effects of aging.

Knowing how your skin reacts and what it needs can help you narrow down your search for your perfect serum. Do you have oily skin? Dry skin? Are you looking to clear out your pores, or to help fend off the small lines that have started to creep up? Does your skin look dull or shiny? Do you just feel like it needs some extra TLC?

Serums are more advanced than your everyday, run-of-the-mill-skin care treatments, and are specially formulated to tackle specific skin care needs. Whatever you are looking to accomplish for your skin, chances are there is a skin serum for that.

Achieve Your Best Skin Yet With Serums

image

Look for the key ingredients in each skin serum and take the time to do the research. Because your skin takes about 28 days to go through a new growth cycle, any skin serum you decide on becomes a month-long commitment. Only you know how you want your skin to look, but asking a professional for their opinion will help you start in the right direction when choosing a skin care routine.

Now is as good a day as any to start on your way to healthier, younger looking skin! Connect with a professional at Be Day Spa, and find out how our skin care professionals can help you on your journey to your best skin yet! There’s never been a better day to start caring for yourself.

When To Start Using Anti-aging Skincare Products

Friday 14th October 2016
image

It’s the age-old question: what’s the best way to stay looking younger, longest? The anti-aging industry is a multi-billion dollar-a-year industry, and it’s no wonder! People want to keep their skin healthy and radiant because it’s associated with happiness and well-being. But when do you start using an anti-aging skin care product? Is it possible to start too young?

Why Skin Starts Aging

There are many factors that affect your skin; there isn’t a simple, cookie-cutter answer for when everyone should start using an anti-aging skin program. How often you are in the sun, what your diet is like, and genetics are all significant influencers on your skin. Scientifically speaking, your skin starts changing when you reach your mid to upper twenties.

The production of two major building blocks for younger looking skin, collagen and elastin, both start slowing down when you hit that mid-twenties mark. This is natural, and there’s not a whole lot that can be done to keep that from happening. But some things that you might not even consider have a bigger effect on your skin that you realize. Your sleep patterns, your diet, and how often you are active or in the sun all change how your skin ages. Taking care of your body as a whole will show on your skin. Simple things like sleeping well and drinking enough water can have major effects on the health and appearance of your skin.

Steps to Younger Looking Skin

image

Time will take a toll on your skin. Aging happens, and there is nothing you can do to completely stop it. Adding a few simple steps to your skincare regime might help counteract some of the negative effects that naturally occur as you get older. If you are in your mid-twenties to thirties, focus on a healthy, balanced diet, good sleeping patterns and drinking plenty of water. Healthy skin starts from the inside out, so getting the proper nutrition and rest is essential. Adverse habits like smoking, eating too much sugar and drinking too much alcohol can have long lasting, negative effects on your skin’s health.

There are some practical steps to take as you advance into your thirties and forties. Making sure you remove any make-up or beauty products is a great place to start, especially when you are about to go to bed. Let your skin breathe and rest when you are, and you’ll begin to see it glow. Using products that contain the essential vitamins and minerals that are so easily lost from your skin is a simple step to take. Focus on products that contain retinol, vitamin E, and natural supplements like green tea and soy that can help your skin retain its moisture and elasticity.

How Often is Too Often for a Massage?

Friday 16th September 2016

Once you’ve had a great massage, the next thought that crosses your mind is probably along the lines of, “How often can I get one of these?” Different people will give you different answers to that question, and there are several factors to take into account

  • Is the massage for your physical health?
  • Is it purely for your relaxation?
  • For your mental health?
  • Has a massage been recommended because of an injury?

Whatever the reason, the physical and mental benefits of having massages regularly cannot be overstated. Taking the time to relax, calm your body and your mind and have the stress worked out of your muscles is something that people rarely do, even though they know how important it is for their health.

Reasons for Getting a Massage

Our bodies are resilient things. Driving, sitting at our desks, picking up kids and groceries, working out and playing sports, taking the stairs with a purse or a briefcase leaning us to one side– all of the stress and demands that we put on our bodies require some extra care to make sure we stay healthy.

Massages alleviate the stress and demands that we place on our minds. Having the tension released in our bodies has a rejuvenating and calming effect on our thoughts. Just knowing that you have a massage session planned can give you something to look forward to and make the stress of the work week seem more manageable because you know that relief is coming!

When Should I Get a Massage?

Pain is our body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. If we don’t listen to the warning signs, we could end up causing more damage down the road. Don’t assume that your body will just fix itself! A quick trip for a massage could offset any significant injuries, and maintaining a massage schedule could reduce how often the pain flares up.

The benefits of a massage go beyond just the physical realm, and they bring the rest of our beings into harmony.  Be proactive—at the first sign of something not feeling right, get it checked out!

Find Harmony Through Massage in NH

Massages bring the physical, mental and spiritual elements of life back into proper alignment. Making sure you take care of your entire being—your mind, not just your muscles—is essential for healing and productivity.

At Be Day Spa, we’re here to help care for all of you! Contact us to schedule your appointment today, and take that next step to a more balanced, harmonious life!

Skincare Solutions for Teens: Esthetician or Dermatologist?

Wednesday 3rd August 2016
image

When it comes to dealing with persistent skin conditions and blemishes, we understand the debate that goes on. “Should I really go to a dermatologist for this, or is there another option?” It’s an important question, particularly when it involves the skincare needs of your teen.

Proper skincare is important for everyone, especially teens and young adults. With the increase of hormones that accompanies adolescence, many teens experience breakouts of acne, prolonged periods of oily skin, or other skin-related maladies.

During this time in a teen’s life, encouraging proper skincare can help establish healthy, lifelong habits. On the flipside, ignoring your teen’s skincare concerns can lead to self-esteem issues and a lack of understanding about valuable, hygenic skincare practices.

Depending on the severity and type of skin condition, your teen could benefit from visiting either a dermatologist or an esthetician. There’s often confusion surrounding these two types of experts, so we’re going to clear the air before moving on.

What’s the difference between dermatologists and estheticians?

Dermatologists are medical doctors. They are highly educated and well-practiced in treating medical conditions relating to the skin and epidermal layers. You should visit a dermatologist for medical concerns such as cysts, moles, rashes, bites, or other skin-related injuries.

Estheticians are health and beauty experts. They are trained and certified in all aspects of skincare, including product knowledge, and they have expertise in various skin types. You should visit an esthetician to address issues such as acne, dry or oily skin, blemishes, and clogged pores.

While both dermatologists and estheticians are experts in the skincare industry, they sometimes approach problems differently. For example, you might visit a dermatologist for chronic acne and end up receiving an antibiotic prescription. While this might be a generalized medical solution to address the bacteria and systems that cause acne, you (or your teen) could very likely benefit from an alternate solution that doesn’t involve antibiotics.

Our estheticians know you…and your skin!

When you come to Be Day Spa, you experience friendliness and warmth from our estheticians. You’re always a valued guest at our spa. As you consult with our experts, they will gain an understanding of your specific needs. We take into account things like your skin type, sensitivities, past products, and your current skincare routine.

When it comes to severe medical problems, dermatologists are certainly the ones to see! But by getting to know you and your skin type, we can better recommend products and practices that will help your specific condition. We’re firm believers that everyone should have a great skincare routine that works for them. If that routine doesn’t have to involve loads of prescriptions, harsh topicals and medical bills, that’s even better!

Reach out to us and share your questions about skincare, and be sure to check out our facial therapy service for details on how to stay glowing and healthy. Until next time, we’ll see you at the Spa!

Should I Buy Skincare Products From the Professionals or From Retail?

Tuesday 12th July 2016
image

Welcome! We’re glad you stopped by. Today we’re talking about one of the biggest arguments in the health and beauty industry. Salons, beauticians, hairdressers, spas, we’re all aware of the same question, and we hear it on the regular: Should I buy my skincare products directly from the professionals, or from a third-party retailer?

We’re going to jump right in with some insights you might not have thought of! Here we go…

What’s wrong with buying skincare products from a retailer?

There are a few layers to this question. For starters, retailers don’t have a staff of licensed estheticians. There’s a good chance you could be buying a product that isn’t suited for your skin type. A proper skincare distributor (like Be Day Spa or your trusted local salon) has trained experts who know you and can recommend the exact product for your needs.

But it’s all the same products, right?

Actually, third-party retailers are often not selling you the good stuff. When authorized distributors are unable to sell off all their old inventory, it usually goes to a third-party retailer. That means it could contain outdated ingredients or be discontinued technology. In reality, most of these retailers are not carrying the freshest and safest proven skincare products.

Why are skincare products cheaper at retailers?

“Cheapness” is often a trade-off for quality. Bulk purchasing of discontinued products allows retailers to mark their stuff down, making it cheaper than distributors’ products. But one thing is guaranteed when you buy from the professionals: you won’t walk away with more than you need! We know our clients, and we advise them on specific skincare products that will solve their problems. We know you, and we know what works. We’re not sales associates, we’re your friendly skincare experts!
